Detection methods for radiator cap failure

Oct 25, 2024

Why install the radiator?

The radiator cap is an important component in the car's cooling system. Its main function is to maintain the pressure inside the radiator and ensure that the coolant can work at an appropriate pressure. If the radiator cap fails, it may cause coolant leakage, engine overheating and other problems. Here are some ways to detect radiator cap failure:

1. Observe the appearance of the radiator cap

The radiator cap usually consists of a flat metal cover on the top, a small rubber sealing lead at the bottom, and a spring connected between them. Check the radiator cap for obvious damage, such as deformation of the metal cover, rust or hardening of the rubber sealing lead, etc. If these problems are found, the radiator cap may need to be replaced.

2. Check the pressure valve and vacuum valve of the radiator cap

The pressure valve and vacuum valve on the radiator cap are key components for controlling the internal pressure of the radiator. The pressure valve and vacuum valve can be tested with professional equipment to see if they can open and close normally. If the pressure valve or vacuum valve is found to be failed, the radiator cap needs to be replaced.

3. Check with coolant

After the engine cools down, you can try to unscrew the small plug of the radiator cap to see if there is any coolant flowing out. If no coolant flows out, or the amount of coolant flowing out is very small, it may be because the radiator cap is not sealed well and the coolant cannot circulate normally.

4. Check the sealing of the radiator cap

You can apply soapy water to the edge of the radiator cap and then try to open the radiator cap. If bubbles are found, it means that the sealing of the radiator cap is not good and needs to be replaced.

5. Replace the radiator cap

If the above methods cannot determine whether the radiator cap is faulty, or the radiator cap has been used for a long time (usually it needs to be replaced at least every two years), it is recommended to directly replace a new radiator cap.

The above are some methods to detect radiator cap failures, I hope it will be helpful to you.
