Do Vertical Radiators Work As Well As Horizontal?

Jul 18, 2024

In terms of style, there's no doubt that vertical designer radiators can add a completely different dimension, movement and aesthetic to your room than more traditional horizontal designer radiators.

However, while looks are important, there are other factors you should consider when choosing the type of radiator you want. It's important to remember that no matter how good a radiator looks, its primary purpose is to heat a room.

Generally speaking, vertical design radiators don't produce the same heat output as horizontal radiators because they don't have the same length as horizontal radiators to draw in cool air for convection.

However, depending on the size and shape of the room you're trying to heat, one or two strategically placed vertical radiators may be a better choice than a standard horizontal heater. It all comes down to how much heat (BTU) output your room needs to heat adequately. If the space is small, a high-output vertical design radiator can heat quickly, and since most radiators can be fitted with thermostats and timers, you can limit the on-time to when you need it most.

For long, narrow spaces, a single high-output vertical radiator may be the best choice. For larger, wider spaces, spreading the load across two smaller 3,500 BTU radiators may be a better option. For larger spaces, vertical design radiators sometimes have an advantage over horizontal radiators because they are more difficult to be blocked by furniture or curtains, which can affect heating performance.

While horizontal designer radiators may have an overall advantage in terms of efficiency, vertical radiators undoubtedly win out when it comes to design. They add a contemporary feel to any modern living space, allowing you to save space without sacrificing style, making them the perfect choice for rooms where space is at a premium and bulky traditional horizontal radiators might take up too much wall space.

And, with stylish added design features such as integrated mirrors, custom artwork or your favourite colour, you can use your radiator to really show your personality, rather than hiding it behind the sofa.
